SINGLE IS BOEM LAUW!
Na een flitsscheiding behoor je tot dat bruisende deel van de Nederlandse bevolking dat zich opeens niet meer ‘alleenstaand’ of ‘gescheiden’ noemt, maar ‘single’. Dat bekt beter dan ‘alleen’.
Singles zijn niet sneu.
Single ben je welbewust -
alleen en toch ook weer niet.

Het is beslist niet eenzaam, dat moet je binnen de 25 Megabits bandbreedte van de druk chattende, twitterende, virtuele hivemind van ons land absoluut niet denken. Want als de singles van dit land al niet op ‘hives.nl’ of Twitter of Facebook aan hun netwerk van olijke vrienden en kennissen klussen, dan maken ze wel happige of hongerige profielen aan op de datingsites die als paddestoelen uit de grond zijn geschoten.
Op relatieklik.nl bijvoorbeeld of op Lexa.nl (Lovematch) of op e-matching.nl. Die laatste site is een dating tool voor de ‘hoger opgeleiden’. Zo was het bedoeld tenminste. De voorselectie naar opleidingsniveau wordt door menig zichzelf adverterende vrouwtjessingle evenwel met een korreltje zout genomen, want het wemelt op e-matching.nl van de Karins en Katriens die iets secretaresse-achtigs zeggen te doen (op academisch niveau dan wel). De host van e-matchting.nl lijkt het oogluikend toe te staan en de dames zelf schijnen MBO al een beduidend stuk hoger opgeleid te vinden dan Basisschool (1). En dat is natuurlijk ook zo. Er wordt trouwens überhaupt wat omfloerst afgelogen in de dating profielen die singles op dergelijke sites van zichzelf maken:

‘Hoi mannen van Nederland dit is Pink11je124. Op knipogen reageer ik niet (sorry), maar elke serieuze mail (met foto) wordt door mij beantwoord. Ik ben een vlotte meid van 47 met drie leuke kids (12, 13 en 17 jaar). Ik werk part-time (baan zeg ik later). Ik rook bijna niet meer, ben opgeruimd en positief en kan goed luisteren. Ik heb mijn leven best wel goed voor elkaar, maar mis zo nu en dan toch die sterke warme arm op de bank met een goed glas wijn en een open haard en een paard en lange wandelingen aan het strand. Hoor ik van je?’

Hoofdpijn van het alleen zijn? Ga e-daten!

Echt een tiepje om eens me te speeddaten. Om er vervolgens in een paar minuten achter te komen dat 35 milligram Efexor voor de dagelijkse dosis vrolijkheid zorgt, dat de kinderen een blok aan haar been zijn, vooral de oudste die als hanggroepjongere in één van de aanstaande prachtwijken van een grote stad in het westen van ons land nu al een paar keer met de politie in aanraking is gekomen, dat het met werken niet echt wil vlotten vanwege die drie kinderen en dat ze dus op vrijwillige basis parttime schminkt en dresst in het plaatselijke theater. En hoe je dat allemaal zo snel aan de weet komt? Het kettingrokende roze elfje (waarvan er dus in Nederland 124 online zijn) mag zichzelf dan hebben getypeerd als een goede luisteraar, ze vergat erbij te vermelden wat voor geweldige praatster ze eigenlijk is.

(1) En wat antwoorden die dames in de snelle poll van MV-Life.nl dan wel op de vraag of hoger opgeleid alleen HBO of Universiteit is? ‘Levenservaring is belangrijker dan een papiertje’. Ja zo lust ik ze ook. Doe bij mij maar die invasieve medische ingreep met uitsluitend een portie levenservaring. Verras me maar.

FLITSEND!
In het jaar 2007, het jaar waarin je 49 wordt, gebeurt het. Je gaat scheiden. 'Flits-scheiden', want dat kan nog net in dat ongezegende jaar.

Het kabinet denkt er na honderd dagen luisteren hardop over na om juridisch gezien het flitsende uit de echtscheidingsprocedure te halen. Echt waar. En dat is diep gedacht. Het is ook erg christelijk gedacht. Het zou me niets verbazen wanneer de gedachte uit de hoge zijde van de nieuwe minister voor Jeugd en Gezin komt. Want die is er, een zalvende minister voor Jeugd en Gezin. Losgeslagen jeugd en gebroken gezinnen, Nederland zit er inmiddels vol mee. Dus moet die minister gedacht hebben dat het wel eens zinvol zou kunnen zijn om de flits-scheiding een beetje te dwarsbomen. Al krijgt hij maar een cooling down periode gedaan van de Tweede Kamer. Zes maanden bedenktijd met een tussen de wrokkende echtgenoten pendelende huwelijksmakelaar die de eindjes weer aan elkaar probeert te babbelen. Dat zou al winst zijn. Dus eigenlijk op de wijze waarop we het hyperverkeer in kinderrijke stadswijken trachten te reguleren: een paar flinke hobbels opwerpen en vervolgens een rotonde waarop je eindeloos in een kringetje kan ronddraaien. Je hindert er niemand mee en je kan de definitieve afslag nog een wijle uitstellen. Misschien maak je tenslotte wel rechtsomkeert. ‘Bestemming bereikt’.

SPEAKING IN TONGUES

My friend the artist and sculptor Wim van Willegen made this object. Three rather heavy pieces of steel were laser cut to reveal the shapes of three different leaves. To me the silhouettes of those leaves resemble a single licking flame in a way. And although the empty leaf forms are light as air, the raw material needed to define all three weighs heavily on the person carrying such a fiery tongue. And so it is with the responsability of Pentecost. Address all nations from coast to coast, but speak with prudence. Enjoy your celebration and all the linguistic skills you have gained on Whitsunday.

Peter Duyvelshoff is one of the most successful pioneers of modern Dutch walleye fishing and also a trusted personal friend of mine. There is no other fisherman in the Netherlands that holds as many 1st and 2nd place titles during 30 years of competitive Dutch walleye tournaments. In recent years, with team member John van Helvert, Peter was Dutch Champion for two years in a row during the Netherlands National Professional Walleye Tournament. Together they produced the award winning walleye film: ‘Amsterdam, Walleye Capital of the World’ (2000). They worked for over a year on this film with a small professional camera crew, resulting in an outstanding production. Truly unique is the random catch of two Dutch record walleyes live on camera! Apart from being a passionate walleye angler, Peter just loves to fish for salmon and trout in Alaska. For over 25 years he organizes successful fly fishing trips to the Last Frontier. His strength during these trips lies in the fact that he guides small groups (maximum of 5 persons) so that he can devote his special attention to everyone in the group. DECORATING FOR TROUT

Step into my portables...
The Patagonia Guidewater fly fishing vest geared up for fishing trout and grayling in mountain streams. A look at the most prominent items:
1. Tippet wallet with four different spools of tippet material. Rio fluorocarbon tippet material for nymphing and floating nylon for dry flying.
2. The ‘grey float’ is actually a nifty waste line holder for any discarded fishing line. I even use it to dispense of nylon other parties left in nature. It can hold an amazing amount of line on the inner coil.
3. Small pliers for unhooking dry flies.
4. A pouch of ‘Samadou’ on a Simms retractor. Samadou is the artificial version of the natural Amadou fungus used to quickly dry a fly. The material is a great and sustainable alternative to harvesting the natural fungus.
5. A C&F Design box of nymphs (holding over 300 nymphs).
6. An upside down bottle of line and fly floatant, kept in place within the elastic banding on the vest and retained by a Simms retractor.
7. A C&F Design box of dry flies (holding over 250 dry flies)..

A more detailed look on the vessel’s suspension and such...
A. A Snowbee retractor holding a pair of nippers. The retractor itself clips in small opening in the cut pocket corner just below the bottom of the small curved zipper. Snowbee by the way makes one of the more versatile retractors available on the market today.
B. A Simms retractor (one of two on the vest) holding a small bottle of floatant that is retained upside down (always at the ready) in the elastic band on the vest.
C. A retracting coil that comes with the C&F Design fly boxes and clips on a stainless steel ring that hangs on a smart elastic band below the zipper of the large breast pocket (on both sides of the vest). Fly boxes are thus secured and still very easy to handle.
D. Another detailed view of that smart elastic band below the zipper of the large breast pocket holding a stainless steel ring that can be used to secure items. The stainless steel split rings do not come with the vest.
E. Another Snowbee retractor holding a pair of large and long pliers used to unhook large nymphs or nymphs that were accidentally swallowed deep in the fish its mouth.

All suspended items tuck away neatly in the many pockets the Patagonia Guidewater vest provides.

GLOBAL WATERMASTER part 1

In this series of clips we will follow Patagonia's Watermaster II around the globe. Watermaster II, the toughest waders for all styles of fishing in virtually every part of the world.

In this clip the 'Watermaster II XL Long' is fishing for silver salmon, dolly varden and arctic char in Alaska's Ongivinuk River (september 2008). We're at the junction with No Lake Creek and the fishing was outstanding.

MERCY TIMES SIX

My friend the artist Wim van Willegen was asked to design an object incorporating the original six Corporal Works of Mercy as teached by Christ. ‘The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats’ (Matthew 25:31-46) enumerates such acts as the reason for the salvation of the saved. Today there is a seventh work of mercy (‘bury the dead’) added from the Book of Tobit by Pope Innocentius III (1198-1216) in the year 1207.

The artist used the engraved six works of mercy to clad the iconic shape of a house.
1. Feed the hungry
2. Give drink to the thirsty
3. Clothe the naked
4. Shelter the homeless
5. Visit the sick
6. Visit the imprisoned

The house of course represents the home of the Lord. It casts a shadow that is longer than the house itself. The artist chose to maintain the shadow of the house in his final design. All was made of wood. The house was made of Cocobolo (Dalberga retusa) and the shadow was carved from steamed Pear (Pyrus Communis). Thus the shadow remains a lighter shade than the house itself.
Five exact copies of the wooden sculpture were made in commission for the Foundation of Protestant Welfare Work in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. To be given to a select group of people who in their life have excelled in merciful acts. HOUSE OF MERCY by Wim van Willegen
